Research shows that Chatgpt has greatly improved academic performance at Pakistani universities

A groundbreaking study that examines how students from University of Pakistan interact with AI found that Chatgpt can significantly improve academic performance when integrated into higher education classrooms. The study shows that students’ habitual use and enjoyment of AI tools are key factors driving their adoption in learning environments where traditional resources are often constrained.

The study, published in scientific reports published by researchers Muhammad Azeem Ashraf, Jan Alam and Usama Kalim, provides compelling evidence that Chatgpt is reshaping how students access information, interact with curriculum material and develop critical thinking skills in Pakistan’s higher education system.

“Chatgpt can be used for natural language processing tasks, including chatbots, automated assistants and customer service, allowing them to understand and generate text like humans,” the researchers noted.

Why students turn to chatgpt

Quantitative study conducted a survey of 352 college students in Pakistan between November 2023 and January 2024, examining factors that influence students’ adoption of Chatgpt for academic purposes. Unlike previous studies that focused solely on adoption patterns, this study links ChatGpt usage to measurable academic outcomes.

What prompts students to include Chatgpt into their studies? The study identified two main factors:

  • Habit formation – students who regularly integrate CHATGPT into their learning practices develop consistent usage patterns
  • Hedonistic motivation – Students’ enjoyment and satisfaction when interacting with AI tools

These factors greatly influence students’ behavioral intentions, which in turn determines their practical use for academic purposes.

In the educational context of Pakistan, the transition to AI-assisted learning is particularly noteworthy. The study explains: “Study shows that higher education institutions in Pakistan will encounter challenges such as scarce resources, student-teacher ratios and limited opportunities for quality materials, resulting in dependence on Chatgpt.”

Impact on learning outcomes

The findings show that students who actively incorporate Chatgpt into the learning process have seen substantial improvements in academic performance. This correlation was consistent across demographic variables including gender, age, urban or rural background, and institution type.

What makes Chatgpt particularly valuable in an educational environment? According to the researchers, it “promotes collaborative learning, continuous participation in the learning process, improves communication, overcomes learning challenges and feedback loops, all benefiting from academic success.”

For many Pakistani students, struggling with traditional rote learning methods, Chatgpt offers another approach. The study found that students “turn to query-based learning because it provides a foundation for easier reading and understanding for complex academic concepts.”

Learn beyond tradition

The study highlights how Chatgpt can transform educational experiences in many ways. It is “a virtual assistant for students who answer questions, provide materials and assist with assignments” while promoting “self-guided learning” and increasing “engagement and interaction.”

Can AI tools like Chatgpt help solve long-term challenges in higher education? Evidence suggests they may. In a resource-constrained environment, ChatGPT provides students with “interactive conversations and challenging questions” that “promote a deeper understanding of the topic.”

This range of accessibility goes beyond traditional classroom time, making it a “invaluable resource for students who go beyond standard college days”. Flexibility allows students to “interact on convenience and cultivate a self-guided learning culture.”

Impact on educational practice

Although the study showed obvious benefits, it also acknowledged potential problems. The researchers noted that Chatgpt “has inconsistencies and inaccuracies because it creates an incorrect hallucination of factual knowledge,” stressing the importance of critical assessment skills when using AI tools.

The results suggest that universities may need to develop new frameworks to incorporate AI tools into educational practices. “There must be carefully considered issues such as reluctance to change, concerns about job safety and the need for training to integrate Chatgpt into the course.”

With the continuous development of AI technology, this research provides valuable insights for educators seeking to balance innovation and academic integrity. The study points to a future where AI and human teaching work in complementary ways, while Chatgpt is “helping to unleash teachers’ time and energy to achieve advanced learning goals and guidance.”

For students navigating in a higher education environment in Pakistan, Chatgpt seems to offer something particularly valuable: fair access to learning resources that might otherwise be unavailable. As technology continues to reshape global educational experience, this study suggests that well-thought-out AI tools may help bridge resource gaps while enhancing student learning outcomes.
