Nature’s creativity in flood control: Expert opinions on an ecologically-centric approach

In our rapidly changing world, where climate change is reshaping our environment and exacerbating natural disasters such as floods, the concept of Nature-based Solutions (NB) is a beacon of hope. This innovative approach aims to coordinate population conservation and conservation of biodiversity. Originating from the field of science, NBS represents actions to sustainably manage and restore ecosystems to effectively respond to social challenges, promote human well-being and provide biodiversity benefits. Examples such as reserved ponds, wetland restoration or urban rain parks, NBS is increasingly recognized for its versatile role in adapting to climate challenges, especially in flood management. This emerging concept, though recently, draws on the convergence of modern scientific insights and traditional knowledge and promises a more harmonious coexistence with nature.

Faced with the challenges of climate change and increased flood risk, an insightful new study on PLOS water reveals the potential of Nature-based Solutions (NBS) in addressing these environmental crises. This study delves into experts’ perceptions of NBS and sheds light on various perspectives that shape our approach to environmentally friendly flood management strategies.

The study was led by Pénélope Brueder, Dr. Alexandra Schleyer-Lindennan, Dr. Corinne Curt and Dr. Franck Taillandier, from Recovery/Ademe Aix-en-Provence and Espace UMR 7300 CNR SNRS AIX MARSEILLETITER. Gathering these insights, the team conducted in-depth interviews, analyzed discussions on recurring topics, and used professional software to check the frequency of certain words and ideas. This thorough approach helps reveal how experts view and understand NB complexity.

Despite these differences, a common theme emerges – the concept of making more space for nature reflects an evolving mindset towards environmental protection.

Brueder further noted: “The concept of making room for nature shows that NBS’ approach is consistent with a broader perspective on the environmental world, known as the new environmental paradigm.” The comment highlights how to address the shift in how to deal with environmental challenges.

The study also pointed out that clearer communication of what NBS needs is needed. Terms such as “plant engineering” are proposed to better connect NB with practical field technology, rooted in ancient knowledge and make it easier for the public to understand.
