Meta-AI conversations will be used to target ads
Your AI conversations will be used for advertising.
This could be a big deal for advertisers, as it would give Meta another source of data to help determine what people are interested in so it can serve them the right content.
announcement
Meta said in a recent announcement:
We will soon use your interactions with artificial intelligence on Meta to personalize the content and ads you see, including things like posts and reels.
Meta will notify users before the changes take effect on December 16th.
Some clarification on the meaning of Meta may be necessary here. I don’t want Meta to generate interests and actions for advertisers to target people who are having conversations with the AI on specific topics. Instead, these conversations will be added to the data held by Meta to inform the content and ads people see.
dispute
Not surprisingly, this caused some controversy. Should private conversations with AI be considered prohibited for this purpose?
Granted, it’s in a gray area. Meta does not use data from private Messenger conversations to inform you about the ads and content you see.
But is this any different from your search history or other site engagements? Because no one is surprised that these things are used for ad targeting. Maybe that’s why Meta is immediately integrating Meta AI with search.
Regardless, Meta says this will make the content you see, including ads, more relevant. This will surely make advertisers happy.
