The poem was inspired by recent research that found that even during early childhood, a small number of lead was associated with lower reading and math grades throughout the school.

Lead can also harm brain development, even at very low levels. Currently, health agencies only recommend action when blood lead levels reach 3.5 micrograms (μg/dl). However, research shows that no level of lead is truly safe. Even small exposure can affect how children learn. These effects usually don’t attract attention. However, they may later appear in the struggles in reading or mathematics. So it is important to check out what we call “safe” exposure again.

A new study in Iowa follows more than 300,000 children. The researchers matched their early lead test results with school test scores. They found that even a slight increase in the lower lead level was associated with lower scores in math and reading. In fact, the impact is similar to that of children at higher levels. These effects year after year, from 7 to 17 years old. Therefore, research shows that current security restrictions may be too high. This also indicates the need to take action before damage is damaged.
