AI may soon help you understand what your pet wants to say

Baidu, a Chinese tech powerhouse, has filed a patent for the system that can use AI to decode animal sounds and behaviors and then convert these signals into human language.

For millions of pet owners who want to know what animals are thinking, this may be the first step to bridge the communication gap between humans and animals.

Baidu’s system Animal vocalization, body movement and biological signals will be collected. It will merge the data and feed it into an AI model trained to identify emotional states.

These emotional states can then be rendered in human language to improve “cross-species communication.”

This is still just a patent. A Baidu spokesperson told the media that the translators were “still in the research phase” but admitted that they were “very interested in the application.”

Scepticism

Some Chinese netizens do not believe it. One Weibo user commented: “It sounds impressive, but we need to see how it performs in the real world.”

Patent approval in China may take 1-5 years, depending on the complexity. Baidu’s idea may be early, but the conversation it inspires is already very loud.
