All of this is GeminiGoogle’s multi-modal large language model, which can process text, images, etc. The technology that powers other Google AI features in search, workspace and Android is the same technology.
What has changed
Learning a new language is not just about remembering vocabulary, but about sounding like a real person. This is exactly what Google aims to do.
Most platforms (yes, including Duolingo) Let learners speak in an overly formal or robotic manner. Use similar tools Speech hangingGoogle hopes to bridge the gap between textbook learning and fluency in real life.
In Google’s own words: “These experiments are not intended to replace traditional research, but to supplement it: helping people develop habits, maintain engagement and weave learning into their daily lives.”
Meanwhile, Duolingo is all ai:
- Just announced 148 new AI generation courses, almost doubled its library
- Replace human contractors with AI “Something that makes sense”
- Support recruitment and performance reviews using Generate AI
Duolingo has been relying on AI since launching its largest subscription tier in 2023. Now, it is accelerating further, but not everyone is happy.
The real problem
Google wants Gemini to be your new language coach. Duolingo wants AI to build and run the entire classroom.
Both of these tech giants are betting on AI bets, and the real question is: Will anyone want to learn from humans?
