The end of NVIDIA’s dominance? Huawei’s new AI chips could be a game-changer

Huawei Technologies is preparing to test its state-of-the-art artificial intelligence chips, namely along the 910D, aiming to directly challenge NVIDIA’s dominance in AI hardware, Wall Street Journal.

Huawei has begun early testing with Chinese technology companies to test the 910D’s Ascend 910D feature. The first chips expected to ship in late May.

Insiders say Huawei believes that the 910D can outperform NVIDIA’s powerful H100 chip, the hardware that previously conducted AI training in China.

This is the main milestone for China to promote technological self-sufficiency

  • The United States has banned NVIDIA’s H100 and new AI chip sales in 2022, thus strengthening restrictions on China’s acquisition of cutting-edge technology.
  • Huawei’s development shows that although the pain of the US sanctions did not stop China’s semiconductor ambitions.
  • If Huawei’s 910D is successful, it could provide Chinese AI companies with a home alternative to American technology, which is a strategic breakthrough.

Huawei’s AI promotion

The earlier Huawei’s rising chips (910b and 910c) made headlines, but eventually lagged behind Nvidia’s top products.

However, Huawei has been rapidly expanding its scale, building powerful AI clusters like CloudMatrix 384, designed to compete with NVIDIA’s latest server technology.

Despite facing restrictions on global supply chains and being cut off from the latest manufacturing technologies, Huawei has used creative engineering (such as relying on older HBM2 memory) to move forward.

Industry impact

  • Nvidia remains a global leader, but its control over the Chinese market is weakening.
  • Huawei’s new AI chips may inspire a new wave of domestic AI innovation in China, further protecting its technology industry from U.S. pressure.
  • Analysts warn that if Huawei offers a true H100 competitor, the global semiconductor landscape could tilt sharply in the coming years.

Huawei is no longer just catching up.

If the rising 910D outweighs the hype, it could rewrite the balance of power in the global AI chip race and keep China from relying on famous figures in Silicon Valley.
