Openai, the company behind Chatgpt, said that if a U.S. court forced Google to sell it, it would be possible to buy Google Chrome.

Chrome is more than just another app. This is the most popular browser in the world. 64% of the world’s Internet users use it. The safari ranked second with just 21%.
If Google is forced to let go, Chrome may change hands. Openai is obviously interested. That would put the browser in the hands of a company that quickly became one of the most powerful players in technology.
What Openai can Chrome get
Having Chrome will give Openai:
- Direct connection to billions of users
- A powerful new way to integrate CHATGPT and other AI tools into daily browsing
- A large amount of data to help train its models
This will also make Openai a serious competitor to Google, Apple and even Microsoft, currently a close partner of Openai and a maker of Bing and Edge.
Turley revealed that Openai had previously contacted Google about potential partnerships to get Chatgpt to use Google to search data. This proposal was rejected.
So far, Chatgpt extracts search information from Bing. But Openai said they had “quality issues” on these data and were clearly looking for alternatives.

The trial is still in progress and more testimony is expected in the coming weeks. OpenAI isn’t the only potential buyer if the court decides that Google must sell Chrome, but it’s probably the most motivated.
According to recent reports, Openai is also exploring to build its own social network. Adding to possible chrome plating, this shows that the company is thinking far beyond chatbots.
Google’s dominance is challenged in court. If the judge stipulates that Chrome must go, Openai may end up with one of the most valuable portals to the internet.
